The Berlin Airlift ran from June 1948 to May 1949, during which Western Allied aircraft flew over 200,000 sorties to supply the blockaded city after Soviet forces cut ground access. At its peak, a cargo plane was landing at Tempelhof every 90 seconds.
The Marshall Islands issued commemoratives aggressively throughout the 1990s under licensing arrangements that had little connection to the subjects honored — this coin is legal tender in name only, produced entirely for the collector market. KM#465 is one of dozens of thematically unrelated issues from the same period, struck to the standard one-troy-ounce specification that dominated the commemorative silver market that decade.
