Obverse description Close-up frontal portrait of the Statue of Liberty, her radiant crown filling the upper field with seven rays extending to the rim, rendered in fine detail after John M. Mercanti's design. The effigy occupies the majority of the coin's field, with Liberty's face depicted in a highly realistic, almost sculptural style. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim, with the date 2008 inscribed to the right of the portrait. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears in three lines to the lower right of the effigy, while E PLURIBUS UNUM curves along the lower left rim. The engraver's initials JM appear to the lower left of the portrait.
