| Obverse description | A bold high-relief right-facing portrait of a Native American chief, his hair adorned with a single feather and braids, adapted from James Earle Fraser's celebrated 1913 Buffalo Nickel design. The legend LIBERTY appears along the upper right field, with the date positioned in the lower left exergual area beneath the portrait. A mint mark appears directly below the date on issues struck at West Point.
