The Battle of Britain, fought between July and October 1940, was the first major military campaign decided entirely by air forces. The Luftwaffe's failure to establish air superiority over Britain forced Hitler to indefinitely postpone Operation Sea Lion, the planned invasion. Marshall Islands issued a series of commemorative dollars through the late 1980s and 1990s targeting the collector market directly — the republic had no meaningful domestic coin circulation and these were purpose-struck for international sale.
1990 marked the battle's 50th anniversary, prompting commemorative issues from multiple mints worldwide.
