The Bank of British North America was a London-chartered institution operating in Canada — a structural oddity that persisted from its 1836 founding until its absorption by the Bank of Montreal in 1918. Printing was handled in London throughout the bank's later decades, which meant plates, paper, and production decisions stayed firmly in British hands even as the notes circulated across Canadian branches from Halifax to Victoria.
Waterlow & Sons produced high-denomination private bank notes with considerable technical sophistication, and the 1911 date places this issue in the bank's final operational period — just seven years before the merger ended over eighty years of separate existence. Fifty-dollar denominations saw limited everyday circulation by definition, and institutional or commercial use would have been the norm.
