| Description de l’avers | The upper portion of the note carries the heading 'HONG KONG BRANCH' within a decorative border, centred above a royal coat of arms vignette inscribed 'INCORPORATED BY ROYAL CHARTER', flanked at left and right by oval guilloche medallions each bearing the denomination numeral '50'. Below the vignette, the full bank title 'THE CHARTERED MERCANTILE BANK OF INDIA LONDON & CHINA' heads the promise-to-pay text in italic script, committing the bank to pay the bearer on demand fifty dollars at its office, with ruled lines at the foot for 'Entd.', 'ACCOUNT', and 'MANAGER'.
