The Arab Bank for Investment and Foreign Trade — known locally as Al Masraf — was established in Abu Dhabi in 1976 as a joint venture between the UAE government and Libya, a partnership that reflected the pan-Arab financial ambitions common to that decade's oil-flush Gulf states. This commemorative was issued to mark the bank's 25th anniversary. Silver dirhams of this type were struck in modest quantities for presentation and collector purposes, not circulation, and most examples have survived in original packaging accordingly.
