Issued to mark the centenary of the founding of the emirate of Umm al-Qaiwain, this piece honors two rulers of the Al Mu'alla dynasty across different generations. Umm al-Qaiwain, the least populous of the seven emirates, has historically maintained close tribal ties to the ruling families of neighboring Ajman and Sharjah through intermarriage and traditional alliance networks.
The Central Bank of the U.A.E. has issued commemorative dirhams in .925 silver with some regularity since the 1990s, though pieces tied to the smaller northern emirates appear in lower authorized mintages than those celebrating federal anniversaries.
