The Green March of November 1977 was Hassan II's masterstroke of nationalist mobilization — 350,000 unarmed Moroccan civilians walked into the Spanish Sahara carrying Qurans and flags, forcing Spain's hand during Franco's final weeks of life and the empire's terminal administrative collapse. Morocco commemorated the second anniversary with this heavy silver issue, one of several in a series marking the march at regular intervals through the late 1970s.
Spain formally ceded the territory via the Madrid Accords in November 1975, though the resulting partition with Mauritania immediately sparked the Polisario insurgency that continues in some form to this day.
