A three-quarter portrait of King Hassan II occupies the right-center, dressed in a dark suit, with a vignette of a traditional Moroccan fortified palace (kasbah) rendered in fine engraving at the upper left. The Arabic inscription of Bank Al-Maghrib appears across the upper field, with the denomination خمسون درهماً (fifty dirhams) in large stylized script along the lower portion. Morocco's 1987 50 Dirham issue came during a period of significant fiscal pressure — the country was deep into IMF structural adjustment negotiations following the debt crisis of the early 1980s, and Al-Maghrib was managing note production carefully. The print run of just over 12 million is relatively modest for a mid-denomination circulating note of this period, suggesting either targeted regional distribution or a supplementary issue alongside existing stock.
Two signature combinations exist for P#61, with the Es Sakat pairing less frequently encountered than the Ben Nani variant.
