Tajikistan introduced its national currency, the somoni, in October 2000, replacing the Tajik ruble amid the country's difficult post-civil war recovery. The diram denominations were struck in brass at the Leningrad Mint — by then operating under its post-Soviet identity — as Tajikistan lacked domestic minting infrastructure of any kind.
