Pau Casals died in exile in Puerto Rico in 1973, having refused to perform in any country that recognized Franco's Spain — a self-imposed silence that lasted decades. Andorra issued this coin twenty years after his death, during a period when the principality was actively building a commemorative gold program to assert its own distinct cultural identity separate from its two larger neighbors.
