Joan Martí i Alanis served as Bishop of Urgell — and therefore co-prince of Andorra — from 1971 until his death in 2009, making him one of the longest-serving holders of that feudal office since the 1278 Pareatge established the co-principality. This issue was struck during the mid-point of his tenure, when Andorra was aggressively expanding its commemorative program following its 1993 constitution, which formalized the principality's modern legal framework without abolishing the co-princes.
