Aversbeschreibung The quartered coat of arms of Andorra, surmounted by a royal crown, is depicted to the left of the field. The shield displays the traditional four quarters including the bishop's mitre and cross, vertical bars, and bulls. A five-line inscription in the right field identifies the co-prince Joan D.M. as Bishop of Urgell and Prince of Andorra. The denomination '50 D.' and the date '1992' are inscribed in large characters beneath the coat of arms.

Reversbeschreibung A finely detailed high-relief depiction of an adult brown bear and its cub occupies the central and right portions of the field, set against a naturalistic mountain landscape featuring stylized conifer trees. The adult bear is shown facing left in a seated posture, with the smaller cub positioned in the foreground at lower left. A crescent-shaped panel to the left carries the Catalan legend in raised letters. The overall composition conveys the wildlife heritage of the Pyrenean region.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Andorra's authority to issue coinage is anomalous — the co-principality has two heads of state simultaneously (the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France), and for most of its history issued no currency of its own, relying on French and Spanish coins in circulation. The gold commemorative program launched in the late 1980s was largely a revenue exercise aimed at collectors, and Joan Martí i Alanis, Bishop of Urgell from 1971 to 2003, lent his name to the series as one of the two sitting co-princes.

The Cantabrian brown bear population, which historically ranged across the Pyrenees including Andorran territory, was functionally extinct in the region by the 1990s.
