Andorra's co-princeship — shared between the Bishop of Urgell and the French head of state — rarely produced coinage before the 1960s, as the principality relied on French and Spanish currency for everyday commerce. This 1963 issue honoring Bishop Joan Benlloch i Vivó commemorates his 1921–1922 diplomatic tour through Latin America, during which he traveled as a de facto Andorran representative at a time when the principality had no formal foreign relations apparatus of its own. It was among the first modern Andorran silver strikes with any real pretension to an official issue.
Benlloch had died in 1926, nearly four decades before this coin appeared.
