Kuwait's 50th anniversary of the constitution, commemorated here, marks the 1962 document that Emir Abdullah III Al-Salem Al-Sabah signed just one year after independence from Britain — making Kuwait one of the first Gulf states to adopt a written constitution. The document established a National Assembly with genuine legislative authority, an arrangement that has produced real political friction ever since, including multiple parliamentary dissolutions and at least one full suspension of the constitution between 1976 and 1980.
