Issued to mark Hussein bin Talal's 50th birthday in 1985, this was one of several commemorative gold pieces Jordan produced during the 1980s as the monarchy sought to reinforce dynastic continuity during a period of regional instability — the Iran-Iraq War was entering its fifth year, and Jordan was quietly backing Baghdad. Fr#12 places it within a small family of Jordanian gold issues, none struck in large quantities.
The .917 fineness follows the traditional 22-karat crown gold standard, the same alloy used for British sovereigns.
