Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Jordanian independence, this is one of several commemorative gold pieces struck under Hussein bin Talal, whose four-decade reign made him the longest-serving head of state in the Arab world at the time of his death in 1999. Jordan's commemorative gold program of the 1990s was produced in strictly limited quantities for collector markets rather than circulation, with distribution handled largely through international numismatic channels rather than domestic banking.
