To the upper right, ancient ruins rise against the field. Issued to mark the turn of the millennium, this piece also served a dynastic purpose: Abdullah II had ascended the Hashemite throne in February 1999 following the death of his father Hussein, and the 2000 coinage program was among his first major commemorative undertakings as king. Hussein had ruled for 46 years, and the transition — complicated by a last-minute change to the line of succession just days before Hussein's death — left the new reign with particular symbolic weight to establish.
The .917 fineness places it at traditional 22-karat crown gold, the same standard used for British sovereigns.
