Tunisia's November 7, 1987 coup brought Zine El Abidine Ben Ali to power after he had Prime Minister Bourguiba declared medically unfit — a bloodless removal that Ben Ali's government subsequently rebranded as a "Change" rather than a coup, complete with annual commemorative issues in both Arabic and French legend variants. The bilingual parallel releases were a deliberate political choice, targeting both domestic and francophone collector markets simultaneously.
KM#393 is the French-legend counterpart to the Arabic-legend type struck in the same year. Mintages for these anniversary gold issues were consistently low throughout the series.
