Tunisia's "Coup d'état" commemoratives mark the November 7, 1987 removal of Habib Bourguiba by Prime Minister Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who had Bourguiba declared medically unfit to govern — a bloodless transfer engineered with enough bureaucratic precision that it was immediately recognized by foreign governments rather than condemned. Ben Ali rebranded the event as a "Change," and annual commemorative issues became a predictable fixture of his administration's self-mythology. By the eleventh anniversary issue, the series was well into its institutional stride.
The Arabic-legend variant was struck alongside a French-legend counterpart in the same year, distinguishing the two for different collector markets.
