Tunisia's "coup d'état" coins are unusual in numismatic history for their candor — the Tunisian government openly labeled Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's November 7, 1987 seizure of power as a coup on its own commemorative currency. Ben Ali had ousted the aging Habib Bourguiba by having doctors certify him mentally unfit, a bloodless transfer that the regime nonetheless chose to memorialize with that blunt terminology rather than the softer "Change" language used in official state rhetoric for domestic audiences.
KM#390 is one of several denominations struck for the tenth anniversary series, with the Arabic-legend variant issued alongside a French-legend counterpart.
