Yugoslavia proclaimed itself a republic on November 29, 1943, at the second session of AVNOJ in Jajce — a wartime political assembly held while the country was still under Axis occupation. The 25th anniversary fell during a particularly tense year: 1968 brought student protests in Belgrade and Zagreb that rattled the Tito government, making the celebratory framing of this issue somewhat ironic in retrospect.
