This issue spans the entirety of Mohammad Reza Shah's consolidation of power, beginning the year of the CIA and MI6-backed coup that ousted Prime Minister Mosaddegh and restored the Shah's authority after his brief flight to Rome. Bank Markazi Iran, established in 1960 to replace the Bank Melli as the central issuing authority, took over management of the series mid-run — which is why earlier pieces in this type carry different issuing attribution despite identical physical specifications.
