Obverse lettering ELIZABETH II · TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS · 50 CROWNS ·
Reverse description The central field depicts a large fully-rigged caravel under sail on stylized waves, commemorating Christopher Columbus's great voyage of discovery. Flanking the ship's sails at left and right are medallion-style portraits of two crowned royal figures, rendered in period style and representing the Spanish monarchs who sponsored the enterprise. At the base of the design, below the prow, a classical bearded mask or wind-head motif emerges from the waves. The circumferential legend PROPOSAL OF THE GREAT VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY · arcs across the upper field, with the commemorative date span · 1486-1986 · inscribed along the lower border.
