The Lunar Republic is a private novelty issuer — there is no sovereign Lunar Republic, no recognized lunar monetary authority, and no international treaty granting coinage rights over the Moon. These pieces are fantasy issues, produced for the collector curiosity market rather than as legal tender anywhere. Lunokhod 1, the actual subject here, earned its commemoration: the Soviet rover operated on the lunar surface for 322 days beginning in November 1970, traveling over 10 kilometers and outlasting its original mission parameters by months.
