Nicaragua's switch to polymer for this denomination came as part of a broader modernization push at the Banco Central, and the Canadian Bank Note Company — long experienced with polymer substrate through its work on various Latin American issues — handled production in Ottawa. The 50 Córdobas was among the first polymer notes circulated by Nicaragua, a country that had spent much of the previous two decades recovering from hyperinflation that peaked catastrophically in 1988, when annual inflation exceeded 30,000 percent.
Antenor Rosales Bolaños served as BCN president during this period, his tenure roughly coinciding with relative monetary stability under the córdoba oro regime.
