The Banco Central de Nicaragua was founded in 1960, replacing the functions previously split between the government and private banking interests. By 2010, the institution had survived the Somoza era, the Sandinista revolution, hyperinflation that peaked at over 33,000% annually in 1988, and a complete currency replacement — the córdoba oro introduced in 1991 essentially acknowledged that the original córdoba had been destroyed beyond recovery.
A 50-córdoba commemorative in circulation-grade copper-nickel is an unusual denomination choice, given that 50 córdobas represented meaningful purchasing power at issue.
