Beschrijving voorzijde At right, an intaglio portrait of Comandante Carlos Fonseca Amador, co-founder of the FSLN, is rendered in a finely engraved vignette against a multicolour guilloche underprint in violet, green, and orange tones. The bank title "BANCO CENTRAL DE NICARAGUA" runs across the top, with the large numeral "50" at centre over an elaborate rosette guilloche and the denomination legend "CINCUENTA CORDOBAS" in a solid panel below. Three facsimile signatures occupy the lower margin above their respective titles: Ministro de Finanzas de la República, Presidente del Banco Central de Nicaragua, and Vice Presidente del Banco Central de Nicaragua.

Opmerkingen

Nicaragua's mid-1980s currency issues were produced under severe fiscal strain — the Sandinista government was simultaneously fighting the U.S.-backed Contra insurgency and managing an economy hemorrhaging foreign reserves. De La Rue continued supplying notes to Managua throughout this period, one of the few stable external relationships the government maintained for currency production.

Rapid inflation soon made the 50 Córdoba denomination nearly worthless in daily transactions. By 1988 the entire Córdoba series was scrapped and replaced with the Córdoba Nuevo at a conversion rate of 1,000 to 1.
