Obverse description The Costa Rican national arms occupy the central field, depicting the traditional escutcheon with three volcanoes rising above a sailing vessel on the sea, flanked by scrolled mantling, surmounted by a banner inscribed AMERICA CENTRAL and a secondary scroll inscribed REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA. The peripheral legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA - AMERICA CENTRAL runs along the upper rim, while the date 1970, a fineness mark, and the abbreviated issuer designation B.C.C.R. appear in the lower exergue. The design is framed by a continuous border of raised beads.
