The P#257 series was issued during a period of sustained inflationary pressure in Costa Rica — the colón had lost roughly 90% of its value against the dollar across the 1980s, and by the early 1990s, the 50-colón denomination, once meaningful, was approaching the lower edge of practical utility. Thomas De La Rue's production is competent and unremarkable for the period, with a security thread consistent with their early-1990s standard specification.
Notes from the 1991 and 1993 date runs differ only in their printed date; the design plate was unchanged across the series.
