50 Colones

Costa Rica's 50 Colones notes of this period were printed by Thomas De La Rue under a long-running contract that stretched across several denominations and successive series throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The relationship was unremarkable in political terms — unlike some Latin American central banks of the period, the Banco Central de Costa Rica faced no acute monetary crisis around this date that would have made the printing arrangement newsworthy.

P#243 is a relatively short-lived type within the broader 50 Colones sequence, superseded as the series was progressively updated through the decade. Surviving circulated examples frequently show horizontal fold wear along the midline, consistent with how tellers bundled and handled the denomination in daily use.
