The Banco Nacional de Costa Rica was established in 1914 as a state-owned institution, absorbing several private banks and consolidating the government's monetary control. By the time this note was produced, the ABNC had been the dominant printer for Costa Rican currency for decades — a relationship built on geographic proximity and the chronic underdevelopment of domestic security printing capacity throughout Central America.

The 50 Colones denomination in this series is considerably scarcer than the lower values; large-denomination notes in 1941 Costa Rica circulated in a narrow commercial and banking tier, meaning fewer were issued and most that did circulate were redeemed quickly rather than retained.
