The Banco Comercial de Costa Rica was one of several private banks operating under Costa Rica's free banking period, which ended abruptly when the government moved to consolidate note-issuing authority in the early twentieth century. This 50 Colones note dates from 1914, placing it right at the edge of that transition — the Banco Internacional de Costa Rica was established in 1914 as a state institution, and private banks like the Comercial found their issuing privileges increasingly curtailed thereafter.
American Bank Note Company produced the plates in New York. Whether significant circulation occurred before the note's supersession is unclear, which makes surviving examples difficult to attribute to genuine wear versus archival survival.
