The Banco Mercantil de Costa Rica was a private commercial bank operating under Costa Rica's free banking regime, one of several institutions authorized to issue their own currency before the Banco Internacional de Costa Rica assumed exclusive right of issue in 1914. The Mercantil continued redeeming outstanding notes beyond that date, which means examples from this series could have remained in private hands well into the mid-1910s.
ABNC produced plates for dozens of Latin American private bank clients during this period, and the Mercantil series follows that commercial contract pattern — competent intaglio work, standard security features of the era, nothing experimental. At 50 Colones, this was the highest-denomination instrument most ordinary Costa Ricans would rarely have handled.
