North Korea's first postwar currency series, issued in 1947, was introduced just two years after the Soviet occupation established a separate administrative zone north of the 38th parallel. These notes predated the formal proclamation of the DPRK by more than a year, issued under Soviet-backed provisional authority rather than an independent state apparatus.
The 1947 series is the foundational issue of North Korean paper money, and the lower denominations in particular saw heavy transactional use during a period of severe consumer goods shortages. Survivors in any respectable condition are genuinely uncommon.
