Jamaica's 50-cent copper-nickel series ran through a period of severe economic turbulence, including the IMF austerity programs of the early 1980s that gutted public spending and accelerated currency devaluation. The "Wide Legend" designation distinguishes this from the later reduced-size type introduced as rising metal costs made the original specification increasingly uneconomical to produce.
