50 Cents - Victoria Silver Pattern

Newfoundland's 1870 coinage was the result of the colony's decision to formalize a decimal currency system ahead of any confederation it had not yet committed to joining — Canada wouldn't absorb Newfoundland until 1949. The pattern pieces of that year, including this fifty-cent denomination, were produced in London at the Royal Mint as trial strikes submitted for approval before the regular issue commenced. KM#Pn3 is among a small number of surviving specimens from that approval process.

The .925 fineness matches British sterling standard, a deliberate choice that aligned Newfoundland's silver with imperial coinage rather than the slightly debased Canadian issues of the same period.
