Obverse description The South African coat of arms is depicted at centre, enclosed within a nonagonal border. The arms feature the six official design elements adopted in 2000, incorporating the secretary bird, the protea, and the spear and knobkierie motifs. The national motto '!KE E: |XARRA ||KE' appears in the |Xam language of the San (Bushmen) people along the lower portion of the shield. The country name in Xhosa, 'uMzantsi Afrika', and the date '2005' are inscribed as the primary legend within the nonagonal frame.
