| Obverse description | Central oval vignette with an intaglio portrait of Sun Yat-sen on a fine guilloche underprint, flanked on each side by large ornamental rosettes and intricate lathe-work border panels. The bank name 廣東省銀行 is inscribed in Chinese characters along the top, with the denomination 伍角 repeated to the left and right of the portrait, and the legend 大洋票 appearing vertically on both lateral margins. The date 中華民國三十八年 is printed in Chinese along the lower right, with series prefix letters and a red serial number above the portrait. |

The Kwangtung Provincial Bank was a regional institution operating under Nationalist (KMT) authority, and by 1949 it was issuing notes into one of the most chaotic monetary environments in modern Chinese history. The Gold Yuan reform of 1948 had already collapsed spectacularly by mid-1949, and regional banks were effectively printing their own stopgap issues as Communist forces pushed south toward Guangdong.
Chung Hwa Book Co. was a Shanghai-based printer with a long history of commercial and banknote production — the firm had printed for multiple Chinese authorities across decades. Whether this note was actually printed in Shanghai or at another Chung Hwa facility given the military situation in 1949 is not definitively established.
