Fiji has issued Disney-licensed silver coins for over a decade, functioning essentially as a vehicle for collectible bullion rather than sovereign monetary policy. This piece marks the entry of Steamboat Willie into the public domain on January 1, 2024 — the first time Mickey Mouse's original 1928 incarnation became freely usable without Disney's authorization, after repeated U.S. copyright extensions dating back to the Sonny Bono Act of 1998.
The timing of this release was deliberate.
