50 Cents Silver Proof issue

Trinidad and Tobago's proof coinage of this period was produced under contract by the Franklin Mint during the height of that facility's aggressive pursuit of sovereign proof contracts across the Caribbean and Pacific. The Franklin Mint's involvement brought consistent technical quality but also a certain commercial uniformity to the issues — they were marketed as collector sets rather than circulating currency, which explains the near-complete absence of wear on surviving examples.

KM#54a distinguishes the silver proof from the standard copper-nickel circulation strike, KM#54, which had been in production since the country's decimal coinage reform of 1976.
