The Sierra Leone Company was a British abolitionist venture chartered in 1792 to establish a free settlement at Freetown for liberated slaves and Black Loyalists evacuated from Nova Scotia. These tokens were struck in anticipation of that colony's coinage needs — an unusual case of a private trading company issuing denominations before its settlement was fully operational. The gold-plated copper variant, KM#5b, sits at the lower end of the striking hierarchy, with pure silver and gold versions issued concurrently for different transactional purposes.
