| Obverse description | A lion passant regardant in a crouching posture occupies the central field, depicted resting upon a rocky outcrop with its head turned to face the viewer frontally, framed by a full mane rendered in fine relief. The circular legend SIERRA LEONE COMPANY arcs across the upper portion of the field, while the word AFRICA appears in bold lettering along the lower exergual area. The design is executed in a neoclassical engraving style consistent with late 18th-century British coinage practice. |

| Additional information |
The Sierra Leone Company was a British abolitionist venture chartered in 1792 to establish a free settlement at Freetown for liberated slaves and Black Loyalists evacuated from Nova Scotia. These tokens were struck in anticipation of that colony's coinage needs — an unusual case of a private trading company issuing denominations before its settlement was fully operational. The gold-plated copper variant, KM#5b, sits at the lower end of the striking hierarchy, with pure silver and gold versions issued concurrently for different transactional purposes.
