The "ribbon upwards" designation distinguishes this issue from the earlier 1967–1985 type, where the ribbon on the reverse crest curves downward — a subtle die modification that collectors use to split the series. Singapore's Monetary Authority had consolidated its currency functions from the Board of Commissioners of Currency in 1971, and by the mid-1980s was issuing coinage under tighter production controls through the Singapore Mint, which had opened in 1969 partly to reduce dependence on the Royal Mint in London.
Circulation figures across this seven-year run were substantial, keeping most surviving examples in well-worn condition.
