| Obverse description | The Kenyan national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a traditional Maasai shield charged with a rooster, flanked by two rampant lions each holding a spear, and set upon a landscape base. A ribbon below the shield bears the national motto HARAMBEE. The date 1994 is divided across the lower field on either side of the supporters. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF KENYA arcs across the upper periphery, while the denomination 50 FIFTY CENTS appears across the lower field beneath the arms. |

Kenya shifted from solid nickel to nickel-plated steel for this denomination in 1994, a cost-cutting measure adopted by numerous African central banks during the early 1990s as base metal prices strained mint budgets. The KM#19a designation separates it from the earlier solid nickel KM#19, though the two are visually indistinguishable without weighing or testing the plating.
