Obverse description The obverse displays the Kenyan national coat of arms in high relief at the centre of the field, featuring a shield supported by two rampant lions, with crossed spears behind the shield and a traditional Maasai warrior's shield at its centre. A ribbon scroll below the supporters bears the national motto HARAMBEE. The date 1973 is divided across the lower field, flanking the supporters, and the denomination 50 FIFTY CENTS appears in the lower exergual area. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF KENYA arcs across the upper periphery.
