Additional information

Uganda's first decimal coinage, introduced at independence, replaced the East African shilling series that had circulated across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda under a shared colonial currency board. The 1966 issues were struck at the Royal Mint; later dates shifted to other contractors as Uganda's political situation deteriorated under Obote and then Idi Amin's 1971 coup, which disrupted virtually every aspect of the country's financial infrastructure without immediately pulling the coinage from circulation.
