Eswatini's 2018 coinage series was issued shortly after King Mswati III renamed the country from Swaziland in April of that year, marking fifty years of independence from Britain. The renaming was unilateral — no public referendum was held — and the new coinage effectively became the first physical currency to carry the country's revised name in circulation.
