Mswati III was crowned in April 1986 at age 18, making him one of the youngest reigning monarchs in the world at the time. This coin entered circulation almost immediately after his accession, replacing the effigy of his father Sobhuza II, whose 61-year reign had made his portrait ubiquitous on Swazi coinage. The transition required entirely new dies across all denominations within a remarkably short window following the coronation.
The "1st portrait" designation matters here: a second effigy was introduced as Mswati aged, retiring this younger likeness.
